General Counselling

Counselling can be the most rewarding, beneficial and life changing process ever.

What? Counselling is a relational process designed to suit your ways of interacting, to help you process life's challenges, improve your skills and empower you to improve your wellbeing. During our sessions, we will work to better understand your strengths, resources, experiences and supports, because you will have used them before to get through tough times and will likely need to do so now. We will work together to create the better future you want.

When? Counselling appointments are usually weekly, but their frequency is negotiable.

I use the introductory session to learn about you and your hopes, inviting you to discuss and sign a 'Client and Counsellor Agreement' to clarify our expectations of each other. I have clients who only need 3-6 sessions, while others need 20-30. Either way, you are the boss of how many sessions we have and what we work on in each one. As you make the desired progress,

it may suit to plan bigger gaps between sessions. Likewise, as we plan to finish well,

we will talk about what healthy closure of our work will look like.

How? My counselling work integrates solution focused, narrative, and person-centred approaches, with cognitive behavioural elements, relating with clients for their progress and well-being. Mindful body awareness is key to this. I have worked therapeutically for 18 years

with men, women, leaders, managers, owners, employees, couples, families and youth

to use their strengths to survive crises, conquer challenges, and achieve their goals.

"Daryl helped me look at our life far more closely and figure out what is truly important."

Female Client – Individual and Couple Counselling

..my husband and I were going through a difficult time. He was suicidal, our marriage was not in a good state, we were both stressed with demanding jobs and a 1 year old (and baby on the way). We could not access anything beyond the crisis team through psych services and there was a huge wait list with Brief Intervention Counselling through the GP referral system.

For me, Daryl helped me look at our life far more closely and figure out what is truly important, hence not working again as we have our second child and leading a simple, less pressured and more fulfilling life. Thank you.

Daryl also saw my husband for some 1:1 sessions. These made the world of difference in that he is, for the first time, taking his depression medication consistently, and has his depression under control for the first time since I have known him. Once again, I know that nothing is perfect, but at least I know the signs and where to turn should things spiral again."

"Having you reaffirm to me what I am good at when we meet... as well as demonstrating respect for me has been great."

Male Counselling Client

“...my heartfelt thanks for your support of my journey over the last few years.

From ‘encouraging’ me to take some time out from the pressures of my life to

allow me to make decisions last year which resulted in my Akaroa epiphany,

and the decisions made then have effectively led to where I am now.

Also, the rate allowed me to continue to meet with you this year, and this has

been invaluable for me as I ended my marriage, dealt with the guilt and responsibility of this and worked to create a better life for myself where I

was happier and only feeling responsible for one adult – myself.

Not an easy path to traverse but having you reaffirm to me what I am good at

when we meet... as well as demonstrating respect for me has been great,

so sincere thanks to you and Workplace Support.” Kind regards, LL
